- NIXI has been actively encouraging use of open source software in its own exchange and Registry activities, and is also engaged in promoting many activities in this field. Apart from sponsorships of various events, this includes:

- NIXI has been associated with web accessibility issues. This web site of NIXI is Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 compliant.
- Workshop on web accessibility (External website that opens in a new window) in Ghaziabad on 16-18 February, 2009.
- NIXI has embarked on a very low priced mass Internet training program (External website that opens in a new window) with Sify's cyber cafes, offering a 10-hour Internet course.
- Along with IAMAI, NIXI has launched a safe surfing campaign (External website that opens in a new window) for school kids.
- With IMRB, NIXI has produced a report on Domestic Bandwidth estimation (373 KB) (PDF file that opens in a new window)

- NIXI has sponsored the development upto first Stable version of Open Source Accounting Package Gnukhata (External website that opens in a new window).

- International School of Information Management (ISIM), University of Mysore is doing two projects in association with NIXI:
- WikiGyan - Data for development and democracy : An online platform based on an integration of (Media Wiki and Pentho) to upload, integrate and visualize data.
- Digital Inclusion through Internet Awareness and Use : To organise Awareness and Training Programmes on Internet in the rural region of Mysore.
- IAMAI(Internet and Mobile Association of India): IAMAI in association with NIXI prepared a website called internetguru.in for students to act as a one stop shop on the practical guide to what can be done on the Internet and its usefulness and also the ways of surfing the internet safely and securely.
- Open Mind Trust : Open mind trust in association with NIXI established 10 local languages Question boxes in Maharashtra. These are free standing metal boxes and user need to only push the button and will be directly connected to operator or can call an operator and get the answer of his Questions.
- ABP Pvt Ltd : In association with NIXI organized TTIS Knowledge Workshop in 10 District of West Bengal, students from classes 6 to 10 participated. This is an initiative to generate IT awareness from the basic school level where the objective is to empower children and young students to understand and appreciate the power of IT from a very early stage of their life.The basic workshop would involve familiarization on computers, application of computers, internet concepts, safe surfing habits, information kiosks etc.
